University Heights Preschool – End of 2005 Update
We’ve had a wonderful and exciting first term at University Heights
Preschool, located in the community of Montgomery. Both the 3-year-olds and
the 4-year-olds have had three months of interesting classes, and the
children have enjoyed getting to know each other. This year, the students
and their families come from a variety of NW communities, which has really
fostered a feeling of belonging to a new, unique community within this
parent co-operative preschool setting. The 3-year-olds have been
enthusiastically exploring various themes, including: the Five Senses, where
they experienced science first hand with cornstarch and water; Hibernation,
where they made bear caves; and Farm Life, which included finger-painting
pigs with mud made from shaving cream. The gym is a huge hit with the group;
they get to expel some of their never-ending energy using balls, hoops and
playing cooperative games with the aid of a parachute. The children have
adapted well to the routine of their stimulating day. They have even had
their first “field trip” outside to see a real live ambulance!
The 4-year-olds have been exploring the themes of Jungle, Apples, and
Sunflowers, as well as the fascinating study of Bats and Spiders, and they
have just finished a great month exploring Colors and Shapes, including all
the many messy but fun crafts and science activities that accompany this
learning. We have started our study of Fire Safety and hope to visit a fire
station soon. The children enjoy all their times together but most popular
is our once a week play outside on the playground.
2006 will mark the 30th anniversary year of our preschool! This is quite
a milestone for our little school, and we’re sure it will bring new
experiences and even new faces to both our classes. We are looking forward
to a fabulous 2006 preschool year!
